Waitlist Process

During registration, courses may fill up, but you can add yourself to the waitlist. During the first week of registration, automated waitlisting is not enabled. Waitlists will be started for full classes, but students will not yet be able to add open seats, even if they are first on the waitlist.

On the Monday after the first week of registration, at 7 a.m., online registration closes temporarily while departments review their waitlists. For Spring 2026, this is Monday, November 10. Departments determine if they can create new sections of courses or increase existing course capacity.

On Wednesday, November 12 at 12 p.m., online registration will reopen and automated waitlisting will begin. At that time, if you are first on a waitlist for a course that has an open seat, you will be notified via email, with instructions to register for the class. This email does not automaticaly register you for the course. You must follow the instructions in the email to actually register.

It is imperative that you check your email regularly if you are on a waitlist. Seats may continue opening up as students make changes to their schedule. If you miss your waitlist notification window, which will be listed in your notification email, then you miss your chance to register for the class. The seat has already gone to someone else.

Automated waitlisting and online registration will remain active through the first week of the semester.

If you no longer wish to register for a class you waitlisted for, please remove yourself from the waitlist. This allows other students the opportunity to register if a seat opens up.

WAITLISTING FOR A CLASS

In My College Account, you can waitlist for any closed/waitlisted class. Follow these steps to make sure you fully add yourself to the waitlist.

  1. In the Register for Classes section of your account, find the class you want to waitlist for or enter the CRN manually. Add it to your Summary.
  2. In your Summary panel, select "Wait Listed" from the course Action menu. Submit. (If you attempt to register, you will receive one of the 'Waitlisted' errors.)
  3. The course will appear in your Summary with a Reg Status of 'Waitlisted.'

The course will appear with a status of 'Waitlisted' on your Summary panel and your Schedule and Options tab. Note that it also appears on your Schedule panel (schedule grid view), however, this does not specify that you are on the waitlist. You must cross-reference the grid view with your Summary panel or Schedule and Options tab. Waitlisted courses do not count in your total registered credits, nor do they appear in Degree Works.

Your waitlist position will be displayed on your Schedule Details tab (on the Schedule Panel), under 'Waitlist Position.'

Note that you can’t register and/or waitlist for multiple sections of the same course. Attempting to do this will give you a 'Duplicate Course' error. If your preferred section fills up before you can register, and you cannot register for an open section due to a conflict, you should waitlist for your preferred section.

WAITLIST NOTIFICATION EMAILS

If you are first on a waitlist, you will automatically receive an email notification if a spot opens up in your waitlisted class.

The subject line of the email is, “Waitlist Notification for [CRN]." The email will tell you the deadline by which you need to register for the course in your account, and will include instructions for registering for the course. See below for more information.

You must register for the class by the deadline listed in the email. If you miss the deadline, you will automatically be dropped from the waitlist, and the open seat will be offered to the next student on the waitlist.

REGISTERING FOR A NOTIFIED CLASS

If you’ve been notified that a seat has opened up in your waitlisted class, you have until the deadline listed in the email to register for the class in My College Account:

  1. Go to Register for Classes
  2. Select the registration term
  3. In your Summary, under the course Action, select 'Registered'
  4. Submit

You always have the full notification period in order to register for the course. Your spot will not be taken by another student if you register by the deadline in your notification email.

If you miss your deadline, you will be dropped from the waitlist, and the next student on the waitlist will be notified of the opening. You will not be notified of missing your deadline. If you still wish to take the course, you will have to add yourself back to the waitlist.
