Registration and Schedules

All new students will first need to apply for admission to Hope and pay the deposit before they can register.

If you are a dual-enrolled high school student or other non-degree-seeking student, you need to reapply through Admissions for each semester you wish to attend.

The below process is for continuing degree-seeking students. Readmitting students who have paid a deposit prior to registration week will register at the same time as continuing students.

Incoming first-years, incoming transfers, dual-enrolled and other non-degree seeking students will be contacted separately about registration for their first semester at Hope.

Studying Off Campus?

If you are currently studying off campus, you will register for next semester the same as on-campus degree-seeking students. You should still follow the below steps to make sure you register for the right courses to stay on track to graduate.

If you have been approved to study on an off-campus program for the next semester, the Registrar’s Office will handle your registration for you. We receive the list of approved students from the Center for Global Engagement.

PREPARE FOR REGISTRATION

You will receive an email about a month prior to registration, notifying you that your registration time is posted and that you can start preparing for registration.

The registration section of My College Account is best viewed on a computer, rather than a phone or tablet. To prevent display or registration errors, avoid using the ‘back’ button while using these pages.

If you can’t register during the first week of registration due to holds, etc., you can still register later, using the registration PIN you receive from your advisor.

Below are the basic steps for preparing for registration. More details about each step are listed in the accordions below that. This is just a general guideline and many steps can be done simultaneously.

  1. Check your registration time
  2. Check if you have any holds that will prevent registration
  3. Schedule a time to meet with your advisor during pre-registration advising
  4. Consider your schedule options by checking your Degree Works and course offerings on the class schedule
  5. Draft a class schedule using the Schedule Planner (optional)
  6. Request overrides for any courses that have restrictions you do not meet
  7. Meet with your advisor to go over your course options and receive your registration PIN
Registration Time (Time Ticket)

Continuing students are assigned a registration time (called a "time ticket" in My College Account) based on earned credits. This does not include any classes you are currently taking. The more earned credits you have, the sooner you can register.

To view your time ticket:

  1. Go to the Hope App
  2. Under the Tools menu, select My College Account
  3. Select Student Registration
  4. Select Prepare for Registration
  5. Select the term you are registering for (not the current term)

Your registration time will be listed where it says, "Time tickets allow registration at this time. Please register within these times."

The start time is the earliest you can register, and you can make changes to your schedule anytime until the end time. On the Monday after the first week of registration, online registration will pause and your time ticket will end (temporarily) while waitlists are evaluated. You will then be assigned a new time ticket that starts when registration reopens. Your new time ticket will end on the Friday after classes begin. See the timeline above for more information.

Registration Holds

Some holds will prevent you from being able to register. These holds are listed in My College Account. You will need to contact the appropriate office (listed below) to find out how to resolve your hold before you can register.

To check if you have holds:

  1. Go to the Hope App
  2. Under the Tools menu, select My College Account
  3. Select Student Registration
  4. Select Prepare for Registration
  5. Select the term you are registering for (not the current term)
  6. If you have a hold, it will say "You have holds which prevent registration."

Pre-Registration Advising

You will need to schedule a time to meet with your primary advisor during pre-registration advising. Your advisor should help you plan your schedule for next semester. When you meet, plan on discussing your Degree Works and your course options. Think of any questions you might have ahead of your meeting.

When you meet, your advisor will give you your registration PIN. Do not lose this PIN; you will need it when you register for classes.

Not sure who your primary advisor is? It's in My College Account:

  1. Go to the Hope App
  2. Under the Tools menu, select My College Account, then Student Account
  3. Select Student Profile
  4. Your advisor's name will be listed under "Advisors"

If you have not yet declared a major or are thinking about switching majors, some departments offer pre-registration group advising sessions. These sessions are a great way to receive targeted advising, but they do not replace meeting with your primary advisor.

If you have completed a major declaration form that has not yet been processed by the Registrar’s Office, but you have already been assigned a registration time, your previous advisor will have your PIN. You should still meet with your new advisor, but you will need to get your PIN from your previous one.

If you know you cannot register during registration week (due to holds, etc.), you still must meet with your advisor to make sure you are choosing the right courses to stay on track for graduation and to get your PIN. Once you resolve your hold, you will be able to register using your PIN.

Even if you know which classes you want to take and are completely prepared for registration, you still need to meet with your advisor so that you can get your registration PIN.

Consider Schedule Options

Check your Degree Works to see what Anchor Plan and major/minor requirements you’ve completed and what you still need to complete. If you are planning on a specific major, but haven’t yet declared it, run a What If in Degree Works. You may also see what's being offered on the class schedule.

If you are a first-year student, here are some recommendations of courses you might want to take in the spring based on your intended major.

Hope has a schedule drafting tool available in My College Account, called Schedule Planner. This is optional and does not replace your registration or reserve a seat for you in your desired classes. More details about the planner are listed in the accordion below.

After you create a draft schedule, you may also want to make a note alternate courses in case your first choice ones fill up. Note that you can’t register and/or waitlist for multiple sections of the same course. If your preferred section fills up before you can register, and you cannot register for an open section due to a conflict, you should waitlist for your preferred section.

If you prefer to plan out your schedule on paper, here is a schedule planner PDF.

If you plan to take an applied music lesson, please complete the applied lesson request form located on the Music Department website.

Although the class schedule is published on a yearly basis, registration is done on a semester basis.

Schedule Planner (Optional)

The Schedule Planner allows you to draft a schedule based on the courses you want to take and any times you can't have class due to work, sports, etc. This does not replace your registration or reserve a seat for you in your desired classes.

The Schedule Planner and registration screens in My College Account are best viewed on a computer, rather than a phone or tablet. To prevent display or registration errors, avoid using the ‘back’ button while using these pages.

ACCESSING THE SCHEDULE PLANNER

  1. Go to the Hope App
  2. Under Tools, select My College Account, then select Student Account
  3. Select Schedule Planner (under the Registration and Schedules menu item)
  4. Select the term you are going to register for

USING THE SCHEDULE PLANNER

There are several sections on the main planner page. In the top section, you can choose whether to search for open classes only, or open and full. You can also switch between terms.

Under Courses, choose which courses you want to build your schedule around. Once you've chosen a course, you can narrow it down to specific section(s) by selecting the Options gear next to the course.

Under Breaks, add any times that you cannot have class, such as work or sports. The planner will build your draft schedule around these times.

Under Schedules, you can Generate Schedules based on your course and break selections. The planner will notify you if it cannot generate any schedule options based on your selections. If you want to review a schedule in more detail, select "View" next to that schedule option.

If you like the schedule you've selected, you can "Send to Shopping Cart." This will save the CRNs in My College Account for you, to make registration easier when your time opens.

Even if you save courses to your cart, it is a good idea to keep notes about alternate courses in case your first choice ones fill up.

REGISTERING FROM THE SCHEDULE PLANNER

When it is time for you to register:

  1. Go to the Hope App
  2. Under Tools, select My College Account, then select Student Registration
  3. Select Register for Classes
  4. Enter the term you are registering for
  5. Enter your registration PIN
  6. Select the "Plans" tab on the top panel. You can add individual sections to your Summary, or you can "Add All" using the button at the top of the panel.
  7. The courses will show in your Summary with a "Pending" status. Submit.
  8. If any of the courses have errors, those will display in the Summary panel.

AFTER YOU ARE REGISTERED/WAITLISTED

Once you have registered or waitlisted for courses, the easiest way to make changes to your schedule is to use the Register for Classes screen in My College Account. You cannot drop classes using the Schedule Planner. More details are below.

Overrides and Restrictions

While registering for classes, you may encounter errors. Some courses have restrictions or requirements that need to be fulfilled before you can register for the class. You can see if a course has restrictions one of two ways:

  1. On the class schedule, search for a course. If the course has restrictions or other notes, it will have an “i” symbol next to it. Hover over the “i” or click the “+” next to the course to see the restrictions.
  2. In the course search in My College Account (under Browse Classes, or, search for classes in Register for Classes), click on the course title. A popup will display with course details. If the course has restrictions, they will be listed on the Course Description tab, under “Section information text.”

If you have not met one or more restrictions on a course, you will receive an error message when you try to add the class to your schedule. The most common error messages and how to resolve them are listed on this page.

If you wish to request permission to add a course for which you do not meet a restriction, contact the instructor or Department Chairperson. If they approve of the override, they need to fill out the Course Override Form. When the Registrar's Office receives their form, we will code the override on your account and email you a confirmation when you can register or waitlist (if the class is full).

VIEW YOUR OVERRIDES

If you have any overrides, you will be able to view them in My College Account:

  1. Go to the Hope App
  2. Under the Tools menu, select My College Account
  3. Select Student Registration
  4. Select Prepare for Registration
  5. Select the term you are registering for (not the current term)
  6. Any overrides you have will be listed.

HOW TO REGISTER/MAKE SCHEDULE CHANGES

You can make register or make changes to your schedule in My College Account until 5 p.m. on the first Friday of the semester. After that time, schedule changes can only be made by following the late registration process.

The Schedule Planner and registration screens in My College Account are best viewed on a computer, rather than a phone or tablet. To prevent display or registration errors, avoid using the ‘back’ button while navigating these pages.

We recognize that this is the first time some of you are registering online. Or, maybe this is not your first semester, but you encounter an issue you've never seen before. We urge you to contact us as soon as you have trouble registering, so that we can assist you effectively. We are open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. You may email, call or walk in.

You can access the Registration area of your College Account in the Hope App:

  1. Go to My College Account
  2. Select Student Registration
  3. You will be taken to the Registration area of your account. To make schedule changes, select Register for Classes
  4. Select the term you are registering for
  5. During the first week of registration, you will be prompted to enter your registration/alternate PIN. This is the PIN you received from your advisor.

There are three panels with several tabs: Find Classes, Enter CRNs, Plans, Schedule and Options, Schedule, Schedule Details, and Summary.

FIND CLASSES/ENTER CRNS

Find Classes and Enter CRNs is where you can search for courses by subject and course number, or manually enter CRN(s) if you know them. In the Find Classes tab, you can click on a course title to see more details about the section, including course restrictions (under Course Description), attributes, etc.

Note the 'Seats' column in the Find Classes tab:

  • It indicates how many registration seats are left in a course.
  • It indicates how many waitlist seats are left in a course. If a course says "44 of 50 waitlist seats remaining," it means that 6 students are currently on the waitlist.
  • It also indicates if a section has a time conflict with your current courses.

If you select 'Add' next to a course, the course will be added to your Summary. You will need to take Action on the course in order to add it to your schedule. More information about the Summary is below.

PLANS

Plans is where you can register using the CRNs that you've saved from your Schedule Planner registration cart. There is more information about the Schedule Planner in the accordions above.

SUMMARY

This is where you register, waitlist, and drop courses. It shows your schedule in a list format.

When you add a courses to this section – either from Find Classes, Enter CRNs, or Plans – the class will appear with a Pending status. Make sure you select an Action from the menu, then Submit. If you don't take action, the course will disappear from your Summary and you will not be registered or waitlisted.

If a course is closed (full) or has a waitlist, you can add yourself to the waitlist by selecting 'Waitlisted' from the Action menu and then Submit. Here is more information about waitlisting. Note that you can’t register and/or waitlist for multiple sections of the same course. If your preferred section fills up before you can register, and you cannot register for an open section due to a conflict, you should waitlist for your preferred section.

To drop a course, select 'Drop/Delete' from the Action menu, and then Submit.

To learn about Conditional Add and Drop, and how to change the credits of a variable credit course, see the accordions below.

SCHEDULE/SCHEDULE AND OPTIONS

The Schedule tab shows your class schedule, including anything you are waitlisted for, in a grid format.

Schedule and Options shows your schedule in a list format and has a print option. You can use the print option to create a PDF – select the print destination as Adobe PDF.

If you are registered for a class with a "TBA" meeting time, it will not show in the Schedule tab. It will only show in the Summary or Schedule and Options tabs.

SCHEDULE DETAILS

The Schedule Details tab shows the full details of each of your registered and waitlisted courses, including your position on the waitlist ('Waitlist Position'). Here is more information about waitlisting.

Conditional Add and Drop

Conditional Add and Drop allows you to drop a course only on the condition that you are able to register for another. Here's how to do it:

  1. In your Summary, select 'Conditional Add and Drop.'
  2. Choose the course you want to drop from your schedule by selecting 'Drop/Delete' under Action. Do not Submit yet.
  3. Find the class you want to register for and add it to your Summary.
  4. Submit.
  5. If you receive an add error, you will not be dropped from your other course.
Changing Credits of a Course

  1. Go to your Schedule and Options tab
  2. The number of credits will be listed as a link. Select it.
  3. The system will tell you the allowed range of credits. Enter the credits you want.
  4. When you click away, tab, or enter, it will automatically update the credits in your Summary.
Pass/Fail or Audit

The grading policy page has more information about changing a course to pass/fail or auditing a course.
