The Hope College Orchestra will be performing its last concert of the season, titled "Russian Masterworks," on Friday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Dimnent Memorial Chapel.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
The concert will focus on three of the great Russian Romantic period composers, centering on the "Antar," or "Symphony No. 2" by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, which is a story about the hero Antar who saves the fairy Gul-Nazar. She in turn grants him three of the greatest powers in life: vengeance, power and love. Each of the movements depicts the gifts, culminating in the greatest of the three, love, which is so overwhelming it concludes with the death of Antar at the end of the piece. The first two pieces of the performance are "Night on Bald Mountain," by Modest Mussorgsky, and "Romeo and Juliet, Fantasy Overture," by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky.
